چکیده

The mechanical response of cells is a powerful biophysical marker for cell state. Information on a cell’s elasticity can, for instance, be used to distinguish between different cell phenotypes, or between healthy and diseased cells. Depending on the application, either the accuracy or the speed at which cell properties can be accessed is more important. However, it is still difficult, as of this writing, to measure the mechanical properties of cells both at high speed and with high precision. In this issue of Biophysical Journal, Mietke et al. (1) present a combined theoretical and experimental study that might just bring us an important step closer to this goal of combining speed with precision in cell mechanics. The methods that are available as of this writing for measuring the mechanical response of cells can be roughly divided into static methods, where mechanical properties are measured for one cell at a time, and continuous flow methods, where the properties of many cells are probed in a continuous flow, using microfluidic devices. One of the earliest static methods to be developed was the so-called cell poking device (shown schematically in Fig. 1 a) (2), where a carefully calibrated thin and flexible glass rod is used to directly press on a single cell, enabling the controlled application of forces in the picoNewton regime. Atomic force microscopy (3) (Fig. 1 b) has also been used in a

Forest road design combining common design techniques and GIS (Case Study: 2nd series of Liresar Forest)

Nowadays, it is necessary to apply modern techniques for the design of road networks, especially roads passing through ecosystems such as forests, in order to reduce operating costs, prevent further degradation of the environment, increase road efficiency and achieve sustainable development goals. In this paper, a new way of designing the road is presented. New design method has the ability to ...

Combining direction and speed for the localisation of visual motion defined contours

Detecting discontinuities in motion signal distributions is an essential operation of visual systems, contributing to perception and visuo-motor control. Discontinuities can be signalled by a difference in speed, direction or both. We measured how localisation accuracy for a motion defined contour depends on the velocity differences that define it. A vertical motion contour was defined by two f...

The Effect of Combining Resistance Training and Endothelial Progenitor Cell Injection on the Expression of Angiogenic Factors In Diabetic Male Rats Induced By Stz

Background: Angiogenesis disorders are known mechanisms of diabetes. With the aim of reducing angiogenesis disorders, resistance training and its combination with endothelial progenitor cell injection are new strategies. Therefore, the present study was performed to determine the effect of resistance training with endothelial progenitor cell injection on the expression of angiogenic factors in ...

A Real World Detection System - Combining Color, Shape and Appearance to Enable Real-time Road Sign Detection

Although specific object detection has undergone great advances in recent years, its application to critical real-time circumstances like those in automated vehicle controlling is still limited, especially when facing strict speed and precision requirements. This paper uses a hybrid of various computer vision techniques including color space analysis, Haar-wavelet cascade detector, contour anal...
